The Full Story
Kooikers ( Kooikerhondjes)
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is an ancient breed, appearing in the works of the Dutch Masters as early as the 17th Century. They were brought to near-extinction during World War II, and only became a recognized breed in The Netherlands in 1971. Since then, they have spread slowly to the rest the world, and are fiercely guarded by their loyal and protective fans.
Our hope is to become one of the first Canadian breeders of these beautiful family companions!
Character
Friendly, good-natured, and alert, the Kooiker is an excellent family companion with watch dog skills as well as athletic ability that makes them a natural at games such as agility and flyball. As a retriever, they also love playing fetch, especially in the water. Their exercise needs are adaptable: A long, slow stroll around the block or a strenuous hike will suit them equally well.
Introduce the Kooiker to cats or other dogs when they’re young and they’ll get along fine with them. Expect them to be reserved toward strangers but eagerly welcoming of friends and family. The Kooiker is smart and willing to learn, so take advantage of those traits and begin training early.
